YES, I CAN TEACH YOU ABOUT MUSIC
I have been teaching music classes, workshops, and private lessons for ten years. I have taught at the Passim School of Music, Miles of Music Camp, Maine Fiddle Camp, Ossipee Valley String Camp, Fiddleheads Jam Camp, Fiddle Hell, Sisters Song Academy, and others. My areas of expertise include:
ear training and practical music theory
fiddle — old-time, bluegrass, country, Americana, song accompaniment, improvising, modern fiddle tunes
acoustic and electric guitars — folk, country, roots, Americana, indie-folk-rock-whatever, moving beyond basic chords and unlocking the fretboard, transitioning from acoustic to electric guitar, flatpicking, fingerpicking, improvising
harmony singing
songwriting
ensemble playing
performance skills
other general musicianship skills on any instrument
I love the process of helping students find their voices on their instruments and empowering them to internalize the music that inspires them. My goal is to help you become a flexible, versatile musician, with big ears and practical skills that will enable you to more easily realize your ideas, play what you hear, and communicate with other musicians. I teach music theory in a practical, accessible way. I focus not on written notation but on understanding how music works.
PRIVATE LESSONS
I offer private lessons on Zoom. If you’ve never done a Zoom lesson, give it a try — I’ve gotten quite good at it! I prefer to work with adults and teenagers who are committed to practicing regularly and are hungry to grow their musicianship.
I book lessons on a one-by-one basis, as my private teaching schedule is at the mercy of my touring and recording schedule. Once you sign up for my private lesson email list (linked below), you will receive a link to my Calendly page where you can book and pay for lessons, and you will also receive a monthly-ish update on when I will be teaching. I charge on a sliding scale of $60-100 for a 60-minute lesson.
If you’re interested in taking private lessons with me, please sign up for more info HERE! (That email list is separate from my Substack newsletter.)
FESTIVALS, CAMPS, ETC.
If you are interested in booking me to teach at a festival, camp, workshop, or other event, or if you have more questions, please send me an email through my contact page.
